Steps to Use an Infrared Ear Thermometer
Prepare the Thermometer
Ensure the device is clean and has a fresh battery.
Attach a disposable probe cover if required.
Position the Patient
For adults: Gently pull the ear up and back to straighten the ear canal.
For children under 1 year: Gently pull the ear down and back to get a clear path to the eardrum.
Insert the Thermometer
Gently insert the probe into the ear canal, ensuring a snug fit but not forcing it in too deep.
Take the Reading
Press the measurement button and wait for the beep or signal that the reading is complete (usually within 1-2 seconds).
Check the Temperature
Remove the thermometer and read the temperature on the display.
If necessary, repeat the measurement in the other ear for accuracy.
Clean and Store the Thermometer
Dispose of the probe cover (if used) and clean the tip with an alcohol wipe.
Store the thermometer in a clean, dry place.
Important Tips
- Ensure the ear is clean and dry (excess earwax can affect readings).
- Avoid using immediately after bathing, exercising, or sleeping on one ear, as heat buildup may give false readings.
- If the person has an ear infection or earwax blockage, consider using a different method (like an oral or forehead thermometer).
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, as models may vary.
